Hi Tom

I would like to add a few comments

A very full day (9:00am to 6:15pm) with an excellent host (Tom Mallens) and a good selection of guest speakers who had chosen a good range of topics, James Dillon being the highlight for most (as usual)

A vast improvement on the last one, we had large tables to sit at, so not squashed into long lines of seats. The sponsors had stands around the outside which you could visits during the breaks if you so desired, no pressure

Having the Top Technician presentation was also a nice touch, well done to them

At the end was a Q&A session with all the guest speakers including Chris Mason from the Motor Industry Code of Practice, some interesting points coming out, plus an update from Dave Garratt about the interests of Independent Garages and access to security and safety related codes

Well done to Tom and the team from Aftermarket for an enjoyable day out, also catching up with a few members from UKAT

I will post some pictures of the day when time allows

PS: The TIP of the day was to not get to inquisitive and start poking around the orange cables on a Toyota Prius

Hi All,

I had a great day on Tuesday and the GEA/ Aftermarket Technical day is definately an event not to be missed. It was good to catch up with some of the guys that I have met through Top Tech and the presentations were excellent.

Special congratulations to Richard, Stuart & John and well done to all of the finalists in Top Technician 2009.

Thanks again to Aftermarket and I hope I was not the only one to start pointing the TV remote at a camera when I got home.

I was sorry I could not make it to the event due to pressure of work (and, as it happens now, a bad back!)

I was intrigued by this comment - can you tell us non-attendees if it is some sort of useful technique or a sign of senior moments advancing?

Hi Steve

One of the talks was from Paul Brooks who is a technical training manager from Volvo. This was all about the safety systems that Volvo have introduced on their vehicles since 2005 and what we can expect in the future

One of the systems is to detect how far in front vehicles are, this system can be used for cruise control and slowing the vehicle if the driver gets to close or nods off

The sensor is mounted up by the drivers mirror and sends out an invisible laser. So in about 5 years when you get one in with a cruise control fault logged or one of many quirky brake safety codes, you may need to check if the beam is working, but being invisible how do you know its active?

Well turn on your mobile phone camera and stand in front of the vehicle, if the system is working ok then you should see a red dot on your screen, the camera can see the beam. So go and have a play with your TV remote

See, I was paying attention

What a good day, well worth the time and travel, its was good to meet the members from UKAT and see such a good turn out from many others,
The talks and information were excellent along with the food! which helped to soke up the beer from the night before, Cheers Peter

I too had a good day and yes that night i was looking at the tv remote with my phone.
Congratulations to the top techs, well done!
It was good to see some old faces.
