A record prize fund and a predicted record entry was announced when the ‘Top Technician 2014’ competition was officially launched on September 26th
Now in its second decade, ‘Top Technician’ is acknowledged as ‘the one to win’ - the ultimate, gold standard accolade to which vehicle servicing professionals most aspire.
“It’s that time again for Britain’s technicians to show just how good they are at finding and fixing faults, and keeping the nation’s thirty million cars safely and economically on the road,” says Top Technician project manager, Nicola St Clair. The competition website went live at www.toptechnician.co.uk with the initial online test paper at the end of September, and entrants can get to work brushing up on their skills and knowledge and complete that paper before the first phase of ‘Top Technician 2014’ closes on March 3rd 2014. A second, advanced online test from March 10th will narrow the field to twelve contestants, who will be invited to attend a half day of practical semi-final heats on April 4th. The six finalists then go forward to a day of intensely challenging tasks at the superb Honda Institute in Slough on May 16th.”
”For all the acclaim and rewards that go to the winner, there’s no elitism about Top Technician,” Nicola claimed. “Any technician from across the UK with three years professional experience under their belt is eligible to enter. It doesn't cost a thing and it doesn't matter which sector of the industry you work in. In previous years, there have been contestants from independent workshops, franchised dealerships, fast fit chains and specialist one-man-band operations all slugging it out in the finals. We never know where the next Top Technician champion is coming from and technicians themselves will never know if it could be them if they don’t enter.”
There is certainly no doubt that powerful eyes in the industry at large are very focused on the competition. Nicola notes that previous Top Technician winners and finalists have been snapped up to carry their expertise and experience into senior roles with leading technology and vehicle distributing giants within the industry. “The kudos and prestige that goes with reaching the later stages of the competition is immeasurable, but no matter however far they progress, every entrant will undoubtedly learn and improve from the experience,” she says.
“The vehicle servicing sector is still too frequently the target of unwarranted and ill-informed criticism,” said Nicola. “It remains a significant objective in Top Technician’s mission on a broader canvas to redress that imbalance by showcasing the excellence of servicing experts across our industry, which are overwhelmingly recognised and appreciated by the motoring public with whose vehicles they are entrusted.”
