Exhaust fume extraction - what do you recommend? #

Karens post has got me thinking.

Does anyone have exhaust extraction set up. if you suppliers etc and rough costings?

We have exhaust extraction, it was second hand when we bought it and installed it about 15 years ago.
Ours is a permanent fixed roof mounted system with chimney and 3 extraction hoses.
From memory it cost about £1500.00 installed.
It works really well, so long as you keep the filters changed regularly.
The biggest problem is making sure everybody uses it all the time, as they think it takes to long to put the hose on the exhaust and start the extractor up

but as from other posts, its not just there health they are messing with.

We brought a used unit from a garage which was closing about 15 years ago, cost i think £200, a powerful fan which is roof mounted and a load of pipe work and fittings.Fitted myself and covers 4 ramps 2 bays one of which is for MOT.
Would not be without it, saves on heating and HEALTH

Wondered whether to start a new thread as slightly off topic, but will try here first:

Regarding Exhaust Extraction, just wondering if, in the case of premises where garage doors are open at all times, is an Exhaust Extractor going to be of much use? (Ian thinks not).

I am wondering if workshop fumes are more the potential problem rather than the Waste Oil Heater which may be faulty (re. other thread).

At this point in time, I am so confused as to where the health problem lies - general fumes in the workshop, but doors open at all times, or Waste Oil burner (which we will check out for fault/leak).

No easy answer to the question but am so spooked by Ian's x-ray result - which as a non-smoker, can surely only have come from the workshop.

We have workshop doors open all the time, but we definitely notice when people don't use the extractor.
There is also a difference in how much soot lays around on ledges and beams since having extraction.
I dread to think what we must all have breathed in over the years especially running and revving those old oil burners and blowing out brake drums etc.

Having the doors open wont make much difference we are talking tiny dust particles that just float around so small that your lungs cant filter the dust. exhaust extraction is direct onto the exhaust and the outside so NONE of the gases and dust will be floating around the workshop.
i have ordered mine. arrive next week.

this kit needs wiring up but in the bigger picture whats a couple of grand for health.

Will be interested to hear if you notice a difference when it is installed.

Got a call from Howard (garage in Manchester) with his thoughts on it all and the company he ranks. (thanks again Howard), which has reinforced my thoughts that extraction should be the way to go.

Just wished we had been aware all those years ago.

I totally agree with every thing said exhaust extraction, doors open and face masks..

But at the end of the the day it comes down to education and time..

How many of you when you were 16 left school and indestructible where told by some old fart not to lie on the cold concrete floor or you will get something or the other or put a face mask on because someone going to respray a car in the workshop??
Bet you wish you took notice now....

Hi Sean,

You're doing the right thing, same as Andy's comments we notice much less black soot around and yes getting the lads to put it on even if just starting it briefly especially on an oil burner gets that cloud out of the workshop!
