Pete - I take your point about checking cam timing, but I'm electrician who's been given this job from another garage. In an ideal world, they should of checked cam timing before chucking it at me. Besides, checking cam & crank signal with a scope is a job that takes a few minutes and is always worth a try before delving in too deeply.
I have to agree with you though, I'm left with little option but to check it now!
