VW Scirocco 1.8 8v 1989 G reg Bosch K-Jetronic - Splutters to a halt in traffic Archived Message

    Hi all,
Not done an awful lot with these but what seems like a fairly simple problem has me stumped.
Customer complains that after sitting in traffic for a while car will splutter and cut out and fuel pump makes a funny noise but then it restarts OK but will cough and splutter until you get going and give it a bit of stick. So far car has had THREE new fuel pumps ( not fitted by me! ) so I think it's fairly safe to assume the pump's alright! The fuel pump relay gets a little warm while running but I didn't think it was any worse than normal, still, I've ordered a new one just to keep the customer happy. But I'd have thought that any problem with the pump or supply would cause more problems all the time. The only thing I can think of is that while the car is stationary something floats across and blocks outlet from tank although I had the car running on guys drive for twenty minutes and not a cough, car runs beautifully. Same guy who fitted the fuel pumps thought it might be the fuel damper but again I'd have thought that would give more problems all the time, anyway he's now emigrated to America - long way to go to get away from a troublesome job I thought!
    Any ideas?
    Derek
