Car pushed into workshop by local dealer. No history and no battery fitted. Fitted battery and started engine, runs badly, won’t rev and cuts out. but always re-starts. Sounds like no fuel.. Fuel light on and needle half across the red. Added fuel, no difference. With a vacuum gauge fitted on initial starting vacuum goes to 18 inches of mercury, after only a few seconds the vacuum drops away to 10 and you hear the idle control valve open, as the vacuum drops the MAP reading increases as expected and stays at 700 to 750mb.This is all without increasing the idle. If you manage to increase the idle without the engine cutting and hold it at approx. 1500rpm the vacuum drops to zero and a lot of backfiring occurs through both manifolds. Injection duration is about 3.5 ms and will increase when throttle is depressed quickly. The inj. duration has been checked with oscilloscope and scanner. Live data looks ok except for long term fuel trim which is -100 on idle and part throttle. When I have been able to get into closed loop, short term fuel trim +97 Checked and scoped ignition both coil outputs good at all cylinders and timing light agrees with scanner reading.12deg BTDC Removed timing belt and reinstalled. (No static marks for checking) Checked keyways on crank and cam.. Checked fuel pressure and flow. 2.5bar reg. 3.0bar non reg. 1.8lpm flow Dropped exhaust no difference. Checked for air leaks with smoke generator. Small leak somewhere along inlet manifold, removed manifold, checked for cracks and refitted with new “O” rings and gasket. As I can not keep this running for long it is difficult to get consistent gas readings, however I can see an excess of CO, so feel this is not a lack of fuel problem. A pin check at the ECU Engine not running agrees with Autodata
