    try unplugging the MAF sensor.

    if it drives better then faulty AMM/MAF is pretty well confirmed. (failing MAF's dont generally produce fault codes)

    disconnecting the battery may have lost the adaptions that the ECU had made to try to compensate for an underreading MAF. thus "revealing" the presence of a fault

    (which is why it *seemed* ok before but not now!)

    I dont evy you trying to convince the owner though MAF sensors are a bit pricy IIRC.
