I do recall being involved with a similar problem on a 2.2 version.The fault was gauge itself ,only available as a complete cluster from GM, (got s/h unit).Also suggest check the tank unit for a clean "sweep" ,these work back to front;low fuel =low resistance ,increasing as fuel level rises.
