Genuine Bosch lambda sensor (which was only a few quid more expensive than the NGK one) sorted the voltage problems. Battery was disconnected for about half an hour which seemed to sort the idle problems. I've used these NGK sensors in Alfa 156's a few times before with no problems! Don't know why it wouldn't work on this car. Anyway, all fine now, many thanks for you replies.
