sorry to take so long to post, but i was waiting to see if the problem returned. when removing the cam cover to check the valve clearances several multi plugs had to be disconnected including the ecu.on reassembly the engine began to run normally and has been ever since. can only assume there was a bad connection, but very pleased to see the back of that one fluke or no fluke. thanks to all who replied,dave.
