Fiat Punto 1.2 8v 2001 - Unable to hold at a stable idle # Archived Message

Sorry this is a bit vague but sitting at home having left details at work.Doh.
    Story so far....
Had a Punto in for test today,it was a walk in and as we had a spare slot I took it in.
Vehicle failed on wipers and unable to carry out emmisions test as we were unable to hold it at a stable 2500-3000 rpm. Vehicle would not dip below 3000 without dropping away to idle. Now I have experienced this on VW Beetles and others in VAG range ( I know Fiat ain't VAG) and, on some Fiats but carefull throttle control has usually gotten them through. Obviously I cannot dismantle the vehicle but it did appear to be fly by wire.
I could find no mention of the engine code in my 12 edition emms book and so put it through as default CAT test, which of course it failed for the reasons stated earlier.I realise there could be other factors causing this but... Question. Has Fiat used FBW on something as early as that? If so is this a quirk of the EMS i.e. VSS says no so revs drop off. Computer says No.
The presenter was selling the vehicle and has three months MOT remaining. But I am curious and before I make the offer of scanning it etc wanted to know if this is a known problem or "feature".
    Anyone!
