Range Rover P38 4.6 1998 - No crank and non start # Archived Message

This one won't crank, although the message centre isn't indicating that it is immobilised. The doors lock & unlock with the fob ok,there are no faults stored in the becm or engine management(Gems)ecu. All fuses, earths & feeds test ok at the becm & gems ecu.The immobiliser signal seems to be transmitting, although the gems ecu is indicating that the security is learned but not mobilised.
I think that the becm is faulty & not sending the correct immobiliser signal to the gems ecu, altough it could be the other way round.I have removed the top board from the becm ,cleaned & refitted the connections.
After removing & checking the red gems connector, the engine decided to crank when the key was turned, but wouldn't fire.On the next attempt of turning the key, nothing happened again except for a click from the becm(relay?).When the starter relay switch wire is earthed at the becm, the engine cranks but won't fire,so it definitely seems immobilised.
After disconnecting the immobiliser signal wire conector at the becm, the engine decided to crank again after turning the key,but the battery was low & didn't crank for long & after charging the battery for a bit,it was back to no crank again.
Could anybody tell me how to definately condemn either the becm or the ecu.I think it must be the becm, because it isn't sending an engine disabled message to the message centre.
Sorry for the long post,Regards, Andrew
