Volvo V70, '02 plate, B5234T3, erratic idle Archived Message

Car has VERY unstable throttle response and no/poor idle until it kicks out 130a-MAF sensor (Multiscan), and then idles ok and performs reasonably. Found a split breather pipe and repaired it. Removed and cleaned throttle housing. Customer had three (!) MAF sensors, all of which gave different outputs at idle, so, with his consent fitted new MAF(Bosch, boxed from ECP), and no difference. Cannot get any consistent readings until ecu goes into limp mode and then upstream lambda sensor sits at 3.5 volts, this with a manifold vac of 18" and gases of 0.0% CO; 9.92% CO2; 60 ppm HC; 7.0% O2 and lambda of 1.461 imply an air leak, but can I find it? I suspect something within the complex of breather pipes. Has anyone been here before?
    TIA Peter
