yes you have to make sure that the signal from the distributor and crank sensor are fazed correctly, if your not sure how fazing is done them move the distributor in either direction and see if it will start, it basically shuts the ecu down and prevents it from driving the AMP, i had one of these years ago with a bottom key-way fault and the crank moved slightly causing it to lose a spark, that caused it to fire the odd time...this was a Audi 200 Quattro. Its been a long time so it mite be wrong in you case....
