    Thanks David,
    Confirmed fault by putting 12V on warning lamp wire at alternator plug and vehicle ran correctly (in fact pump ran continuously, if the alternator was to fault to 12V the pump wouldn't ever stop!).
    Waiting for new regulator (and brushes) for alternator which should do the job.
