    I take it its a petrol? And twin cam? An engine code would be handy.

    If it is the petrol twin cam engine, then yes the throttle control is that big box thing under the manifold, but these do suffer from the VVT actuator playing up on top of the cam cover at the belt end, its a valve that controls oil flow to the hydraulics controlling the valve timing and is held on by 4 bolts, sometimes found on the inlet cam and sometime on the exhaust cam. Check the cam timing and clean the valve before replacing the actuator itself. Some of these actuators have been modified and require a wiring kit as the connectors are different. But all this needs to be confirmed by code reading, you normally see a code relating to camshaft position.
