Peter,
This engine has a so called 'Engine speed fluctuation sensor'fitted at the crank pulley end.On the example I looked at the wiring from this sensor was insecurely attached after a cam belt job and had in fact been worn through by the alternator belt causing poor output.As the distributor sensors check out OK it might be worth having a look a the other end of the engine.
