FIXED,replaced coolant temp sensor to no avail then tried pre cat lambda sensor this also did not work, read a recent post on a golf gti but with different symptoms and decided to try an air mass meter and to my surprise this seems to have done the trick thanks to a wonderful site with a vast amount of information available to help us all cheers Pete
