FIXED. Finally managed to get this back in and work through the problem (said I was determined to nail it down!). Went through all checks again but this time carried out the comp: test when hot. (yes I know all tests should be carried out at normal working temp. This time noticed comps were very slightly lower on 1&4, so checked valve clearances and guess what No1&4 exh: only had a couple of thou: clearance although the rest were perfect,(strange). Anyway re-shimmed all and now runs fine (well, as fine as any Renault single point ever ran!). So what we had here boys and girls was a Hot Misfire, not caused by any fancy electrical or electronics, just plain old tight tappets that were just throwing the emissions out slightly. See, back to basics, should have known, me being an engine builder an all. Yes I'm hanging my head in shame but just goes to show how easy it is to miss the obvious, ten years ago the first component to have been removed from the engine would have been the ROCKER COVER and how many of us do that now unles we absoluteley have to? not many I bet.
