    From my experience with the L1E 16V Zetec - in most cases the problem were with carbon on the ex' valves.
    We did cylinder head work and replaced the valves stems and renew the lifters- TSB No':1997 024- Engine Stalls during warm up,runs roughly after cold start and exhibits serious loss of power.
    The best test and easy 1 - accelerate the engine RPM for 4500 for 1 min' - and check the HC-at idle and look how the engine start to surge and the HC goes up till 800-1200ppm!!!
    If it so - you should do the head work.
