Hi. This may be of interest to anyone that comes across the problem, I remember some posts previously about a Laguna diesel that wouldn't start, It would crank over Very lively but wouldn't start, It logged a fault for Crank Sensor and Air mass sensor, At the Time, I found it hard to believe that the Starter motor would Cause Interference, But Appear to work correctly and crank over rapidly. But I always listen and try to Remember these unusual problems that Techs Post about on UKAT, Then Last week we got the Same Type of Vehicle with the Exact Fault. Rev counter Bouncing about all over the place, Non start without pressing the throttle and the customer insisted that it used to start perfectly without throttle, And It also logged faults for Air Temp Sensor and Crank sensor, Plus several others that someone had invented by unplugging Various sensors whilst trying to find the fault. And I think there was possibly another one where someone offered to send me the Old Starter motor, To see if We could Find out what was causing the problem, We never Managed to get hold of that Starter motor, So We had to wait Over a year until We got the same problem, We stripped the starter motor which was covered in oil, (100,000 miles like one of the other posts) And saw straight away what the problem was, A Small amount of oil had contaminated the commutator causing arcing of the brushes, You could see black segments where the brushes were not contacting correctly. It's amazing that it didn't cause the starter to be sluggish but it didn't seem to. So we overhauled the starter motor, Refitted it and the car fired on the first turn of the key. The fault codes cleared and have not returned. ( success again due to UKAT and it's Members.)
