My MOT station had one of these doing exactly the same thing ,what was happening was the temp. sensor was giving an excess temp. reading to the ECU which does indeed shut the engine down to protect it. The sender unit is in a real bugger of a place to get to on the back of the head and I believe the boys had to drop the gearbox and crossmember to get at the thing but a new temp. transmitter cured it.
