Hi John,
Putting centre pin of three pin connector to earth is a useful test for the base switching function of the amplifier, however it should only spark once every time you touch it to earth momentarily (you are creating one square wave every time you touch earth)if it sparks continually when earthed then I would suspect amplifier, even if new.
