VW Golf Mk III 1995 AGG 2.0 - Non start, second hand engine fitted #

Hi there,
called out to a garage with a golf non start. Second hand engine fitted, crank sensor replaced vehicle on test drive lost power. Got it back to work shop and stopped it, it would not restart. I tested it with scope and crank sensor was sporadic with signal. Fitted new one, that is this engines fourth and it ran perfectly.
What could cause an engine to go through so many crank sensors??
I replaced coil although I thought if this was spiking it would damage ECU not sensor.
The sensor is a hall sensor and this vehicle has also had a new dizzy fitted by garage before I got there.

Hi James, the aftermarket sensors for this engine are useless.I've even had new one's not even start the car.Original units only and they're expensive so nobody wants to buy them.

Thanks lads,
I will check bottom pulley, i only have one scope lead for my fluke as a new set costs £150, I need to bite the bullet and buy new set. But I cant do tdc and rpm sensor tests together at mo so Ill physically check. I also think the after market crank sensors maybe crapp, although that has been 4.

James, is your fluke a pms 100, if so pico sell these leads a lot cheaper, (BNC connector type) i have a set they are good quality and work perfect.

Evening All,

I have dragged this one up because I have the same problem with this model. After-market Crank sensors (Fuel Parts) have been fitted (2) in quick succession and failed - or not man enough for the job. In this thread there is mention of a reason why the Crank sensors keep failing and Dave Hill has posted a link with the answer. Trouble is I cannot find the details. Anyone have the answer please before customer lays out big money for a REAL cps.

Hi All,

A CPS from GSF fixed this problem. On careful inspection, it was seen that this CPS had two off-set notches incorporated into it presumably to allow heat to escape which I think was the problem with the other after-market sensors.
