BMW 318 N42 - Non start, fault code for exhaust cam sensor #

( Optional ) Engine Code: N42B18A
( Optional ) Scanner used: Solis,Pico,KTS

Towed in as a no go.hHas fault code for exhaust cam sensor. Sensor has been replaced. Fault code still present.

At this point i got involved and scoped the crank and both cam sensors to get all signals present and correct.

The coils are being triggered,the plugs are wet and its got compression (160+).
When its 1st cranked it fires slightly or pops through the manifold on occasion so am starting to think its a cam timing fault.Would imagine I'll need tooling to check this.

Hi Colin,

These would normally be good at letting you know about cam position problems.

I have seen a few with cam signal codes that were actually a crank signal fault. I know you said you scoped it but maybe worth another look.

Is the code for cam position or signal? Can you remember the VIN and the exact code?

Hi Colin, I have started to see a few of these now with the cam timing jumped causing this problem.Once you have eliminated the cam and crank sensor signals as suggested by Alan I would then remove the rocker cover to check the timing .You will need lock up tools and a pin for the crank to set the timing . If it is in fact timed incorrectly I would reset it and replace the chain tensioner ( the few I have done have seemed very weak)and there is a modified retrofit chain slider to fit on the front cam Carrier to stop the chain jumping , available from BMW. If you need the part number or any further info let me know .
