Mercedes Benz 230 2.0 1999 (V) - Misfire, shuts down 1 & 4 cylinders #

Year of Manufacture *: 1999
Engine Code or Type *: 2000

Hi, Hope I can get some help on this one. Vehicle starts on 4 cyls and starts to surge until it drops on to cyls 2&3 only, at this point it won't rev above 2k. I have checked injectors and theres no earth pulse at the ecu to cyls 1&4.

I'm ready to have the ECU tested but wondered if something strange would cause a fault like this on only two cylinders.

Had one previously doing a similar thing and it was the air mass.

Agree with Vince. Spent a bit of time on one of these with same fault. Was told to try air mass and cured. I always meant to find out why this affects the earths on these two cyls.

Maybe the ECU has "disabled" the injectors to prevent damage to the catalyst.

Hi dave you are most likely right. When it was running ok I checked the gasses and the switching of the lambda sensors and all was ok at that time then would drop a couple of cyls without warning. I also checked live data on the air flow and this too read ok. I would have thought that the lambda sensors would have to give rich reading before the ecu would cut out the injectors. Learning every day

must agree with what been said mercs will turn off injectors if a damaging misfire is seen & this can be caused by a faulty AFM genuine bosch can be cheaper than merc but stay away from cheapos as mercs can be a bit fussy

My Understanding is that the ECU would cut injectors based on info from the crank sensor ie how much time the crankshaft has taken to "rotate" between "specific points" !

Hi Guys

Have fitted a new air mass sensor and the fault is the same. Runs good for a minute or so then starts to splutter and drops onto cyls 2&3 only and won't rev.

I'll put Autodiagnos on it on Monday but think Testing ECU might be next though.

Any more ideas very welcome.

i had one like this the airmass had failed replaced that and it wasnt much different come to find out the cat had collapsed due to the airmass failing

Cheers, have heard of this one in the past, but I'm loosing the pulsed earth from the ECU to injectors on cyls 1&4. Have checked right back to the ECU. Think ECU will be going to ATP next week short of any revelations!!!

I have a c class in at the moment that keeps losing cylinder 1. I fixed an air leak (breather hose)which is situated cyl 1 branch. I hoped this would sort fault but it hasn't, although fuel trim fault and air flow no longer set. I get misfire code cyl 1. In my scanner kts 520 there is a function for smooth running evaluation, it is a bar graph for each cyl. It shows a fault on cyl 1 even though it appears to tick over smoothly. I disabled another cylinder to prove the test was accurate and it was. I carried out compression test and found cylinder 1 to be about 15% lower. I spoke to merc specialist and was told valve problems very common. I suspect the induction leak may have damaged valve seat slightly. The moment the cylinder shuts down the mil comes on and logs misfire code. If I turn ign off and back on it resets and is back on 4. I hope this helps.

i have had the same problem, fitted a new maf and
no better,fitted a genuine MERC ONE and drove
10 mile vehicle is fine
