Vauxhall Astra 1.4 Z14XE 2001 - Hard to start, hot and cold, multiple coil codes - Fixed #

hi all at the forum

I have a problem on a 51 plate vaux astra which I could do with some help with,
The car is a cow to start up hot or cold ,the only way to get it going is to very lightly press the accelerator while turning the key,sometimes it will start after 6-8 times, sometimes it takes longer.
when its running its ok ,After scanning i keep getting
P0351 Ignition Coil A Primary/secodary cicut control
P0352 Ignition Coil B Primary/secodary cicut control
P0353 Ignition Coil C Primary/secodary cicut control
P0354 Ignition Coil D Primary/secodary cicut control
I have tried a coilpack ,crank sensor but no differance ,Is there anybody who can help me ,I would be so grateful

Hi tony, Load test power and earth feeds to the coil pack then if OK, get your scope out and look at enable/primary switching patterns.HTH

I would suspect ECU, faulty coil pack has damaged it.

Hi Tony,

I am not sure how much help this will be to you but I had a similar experience to yours with a Hyundai a few years ago.
The P035x code seems to be quite rare and from its description you would assume it is set due to an electrical fault but that is not so. With mine I proved it could be set by a misfire even though you would expect that to set a P030x code.
I would suggest you look at compressions, both leak down and pressure as well as scope volts and amps on the secondary.

Hi Tony,

I have had exactly the same symptoms as you on a zafira Z16XE, after verifying connections and coil condition, I diagnosed and fitted new ECU and customer took my advice of a new coil.

So I would tend to agree with Kevin.

hI, lads thanks for replies so far but im still stuck with the beast,
just to update after a lot of cranking the engine will run sweet as you like but i have noticed on the
road that the revs are hanging around 2000 till engine warms up.
Also i booked the vehicle in to local dealer on friday, I informed them that it has a new set of plugs fitted and that i have tried a new coil pack/crank sensor....After paying them £86-70,
The report advised a new coil pack and a set of plugs, What a rip off. I am fuming

I still think ECU (i,v had the exact same codes and new ecu fixed them but on 1.6 astra,s) and as Mike seems to back that up

BUT check compressions etc as per Alan,s post before you buy a new ecu.
Perhaps some-one near you has TECH2 (like me, many here have)so you don,t need to go to your local dealer

to program it.

hi, all on the forum and thanks again for the feedback, Today i swopped the coilpack on to a donor car same cc same year ,coilpack worked on donor car perfect, donor coilpack didnt work on my car ,so i am also thinkin ECU , im having, it checked in morning i will let you know

thanks for the imput.
i fitted a new ECU and problem sorted
I would of thought my local dealer would have found the problem,or at least not ripped me for £87 for a bad diagnostic.....easy money im still fuming over the situation

Why ask for advice and then not take it?

If you had you would have saved £87.oo........

Moral is, the dealer is not always the best option and just because they all signed up to codes it doesn't make them any better than the rest of us.
