Ford Focus 1.6 2003 - No HT, coil and crank sensor replaced - Fixed #

Engine Code or Type *: 1600 DURATEC

HI GUYS ANYONE HAD THIS PROBLEM NO HT REPLACED COIL PACK AND CRANK SENSOR TO NO AVAIL CHECKED FOR BROKEN WIRES I HAVE A FEED TO THE COIL AND HAVE SCOPED THE CRANK SENSOR CHECKED FUSES ETC STILL NO HT HAS ANYONE ANY IDEAS CHEERS JOHN

Did you get comms with pcm ? if so what codes did you get if any? . did you scope the coils?

Hi john, are the injectors switching, do you have a reading for rpm on live data? If these ok Recommend volt drop the live supply to the coil, then carry out a switching test on lt wires at the coil (looking for about 0.3v with the bar graph pulsing) on each wire. If not switching check output back at ECU. If no switching here would ask customer if they were previously driving the vehicle with a misfire...if so may have taken out ECU...

We had one like this a while back - not sure if it is still the same set up. The crankshaft had too much endfloat (around 3mm) and the crank sensor was damaged by the flywheel. We spaced the new sensor slightly so it didn't touch. On start sometimes the signal is too weak but press the clutch pedal and it moves the flywheel nearer the sensor! Still running fine 4 years later. The local Ford dealer said the endfloat was 'normal'.

Thanks for the input guys camco picked up the ecu today and said it has a fault on the ht output will be back next week so fingers crossed cheers john

Hi.
The people repairing your ECU will probably have told you already but make sure you replace the coil and leads with genuine Ford units and the plugs when you re-fit it. The coil may well be what damaged the ecu in the first place. If you don't you may find any warranty given by whoever is repairing the ECU will be void!

I'm told that a faulty ECU can damage a coil pack and a faulty coil can damage the ECU!!

Also - look for evidence of water ingress into the plug gallery. This may be what caused the problem in the first place.

Lastly - advise the customer that, if they have been driving with a mis-fire, there is a possibility of damage to the cat. If you don't cover your back you will be amazed how quickly they'll come back with the old "ever since you did the coil.... etc"!

Sound advise Paul , i'm sure i read an article where James Dillon got caught out with same fault .
It's sad we have to write everything down to cover the "since ya" customers

Nice article, shame they showed the coil being driven by the base of the transistor though (techies will no what I'm talking about)!
