Rover 216 1998 K Series - Cutting out - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 1998
Engine Code or Type *: 1600 16v

Customer has had problem with cutting out, no pattern to it, but there is a lose of power cuts out but then will re-start, a few times it has not re-started straight away and has had to be left for about 20 min. No code present, plugs leads cap and rotor ok, has had new coil and crank sensor, fuel pressure seams ok and can hear pump ok. Any ideas. PS did have a look at archives but none the same .

Forgot to say it will tickover in workshop for ages and no cut out till you go on roadtest.

possibly sticking valves if there is power loss, try to induce it on the road select low gear ie 2nd lots of revs then go straight into 5th the high oil pressure may kick it off.

What are compressions like when non start?

Evening Stephen,

Have you been to it as a non-starter? If so do we have spark/fuel etc. I mention this because I have seen them with faulty fuel pump primary windings. Pump gets hot and windings part. Pump cools down and away she goes. Also had one with faulty fuel cut-off switch which was then by-passed.

Hi Stephen,

What is missing in the 20 mins it won't start?

ie spark, coil trigger, injector pulse, fuel supply, comression? etc.

The answer to this question will narrow the possibilities considerablyand make helping you a little easier.

Hi. Stick Vac guage on when non start. Great tool mostly forgotten about.

Hi all thanks for your comments, it has lost the spark when non starting, has new coil and ckp, had the ecu checked that has come back as ok, as i thought the ignition amp in ecu might be at fault and that is how it feels on the road when fault happens. Customer has updated us with more of the story from it now (as not telling you might make it cheaper ) the "AA" had put a new rotor in when it first went wrong and it had then been ok for a while. So i will change rotor and dissy tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks again for help so far..

Hi Stephen,

Not sure if I am missing something here. If the vehicle has no spark as a non-starter, I would assume this would be tested at some point at the coil. If this is the case, it would be pointless replacing the rotor and cap. If there is a spark there and nothing at plug leads then the fault is self-evident. Be careful about the validity of the ECU test. Some companies just bench test the ECU for X mins and if it doesn't play up then its deemed as ok. Now if its bench tested for X + 1 mins...... The rotor arm is however a notorious weak point. I try and buy the one without the metal insert.

Hi Dave
Interesting point you make here i always used Lucas rotors as they were the original manufacturer for Rover but when i wanted one the other day my suppplier told me they no longer had Lucas ones but intermotor which i declined only to have the manager of the cpompany ring back and say that intermotor now makes them for lucas in some tie up deal.

Is this right or a load of bull?

Hi all thanks for all the help, Had the ecu back all ok. Finally traced to a fault in the relay box near the ecu which contains 3 relays in one box, one of the coils was getting hot and just letting go leaving a bad contact high resistance on coil side changed for a known good one and ok now. But yes we have had problems with inter stuff as well, did not know about the tie up with Lucas, but it seams as a lot of stuff comes from one factory in china or outer mongal somewhere just in different boxs. Thanks again
