Peugeot 307 NFU 2002 - Complaining of a fuel smell at times #

Engine Code or Type *: NFU

Hi all. Strange one this one, customer complaining of fuel smell at times. Road tested yesterday, has smell of petrol when braking for a split second. Then its ok until you brake again. Has anyone come across this before? Have checked for fuel leaks but all ok. John

I have got one of these with identical symptoms. I have been all over the car with my gas analyser pipe & nothing shows up. Removing the fuel cap I hear the pressure difference "hiss", so the tank is sealed well.

On road test, when I pulled up in a layby there was a definite increase in the smell & I wondered if the smell could be entering through the servo. I know that it is unlikely, as the vacuum is being drawn away from the servo but I am just bouncing ideas around.

Maybe the effect of braking is causing the smell to shift from the rear of the vehicle (petrol vapors being more dense than air). Perhaps the smell is coming through the vents???

Petrol smells are a nightmare to find (along with rain water leaks). Hopefully some one out there has found the answer.

John / Dave ive had a couple of leaking carbon canisters , worth disconnecting and blocking off pipes and recheck

I haven't had this problem on 307 but other pugs with similar complaints have been leaks from the filler neck to tank. Breather lines going into the top of the tank and a broken pump/sender securing ring. Access is under the back seat right side, though not absolutely certain on 307 as I've yet to do one.

Some pugs in oz leak from the plastic to rubber joiners from the fuel lines in right side of the engine bay, very common on 306.

However all of these did give clues with stains on the bottom and sides of the tank etc.

I agree that they can be difficult to find.

I use a combustible gas detector for finding the source of these sort of problems and I'm usually able to find them. I have even fixed it near various parts and then road tested and it'll beep like crazy as a fuel/fume leak occurs. Has anyone located a fault like this with a smoke leak tester? I've not tried myself. I noticed Snap-On are selling filler cap adapters now for their leak tester. If you could activate the solenoid for the charcoal cannister while the system was under test surely that would be the whole system filled with smoke. The most awkward intermittent smell of fuel I had was on a Merc A class where it was from the plastic fuel rail feeding the injectors.

I will get this back in for a thorough check of the purge canister & associated parts.
