Renault Megane 2004 - EGR fault, code P0486 - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2004
Engine Code or Type *: PO486

This vehicle came in with this fault PO486 (EGR position sensor) and on inspection i found the usual blocked valve and ports etc. Cleaned and fitted new valve and reset system. The fault clears but then comes back after approx 1 min. even without the engine running. I have checked the wiring to the ecu (ok) and tried another valve.
Has anyone come accross this?

hi roger
ive not done one myself yet but i did read you have to reset egr adaptions so ecu learns new positions.
im not sure which machines can do this because as i said not done myself,hope this gives you a start & im sure someone will add to this who has done the job.

Hi Phil. When you say that you reset the system, do you mean by clearing codes or did you Reset the EGR adaptions. ???

Also what Tool are you using. ?

p.s. if i wasn't so slow at typing i wouldn't have posted almost the same questions as colin.

Had similar problem. After fitting a new egr I erased fault code but came back. Using solus, snap on helpline advised going to eobd and erasing codes from there as well. All OK after that.

Thanks for your replies. I used my modis because my autodiagnose lead has broken, so i will get that fixed and try that one.

Hi Phil. It does sound as though the Adaptions have not been Reset properly. as that is exactly what happens if you dont reset it.

horrible feeling isn't it when you dont know if you can trust the diagnostic tool that you are using and you waste hours looking for a fault that isn't there.

i have also seen lots of renaults where you have to erase codes in "Renault" and then in "EOBD" to clear the codes but yours sounds more like an adaption problem.

Has Modis got a "Reset adaptions" button or a "Reset EGR adaption" Button. ?? I think Clip has a seperate option for "EGR Adaption".

Hi Tony
I.m sure Clip will say initialise egr or erase code. And that would be the the order to do the clear, initialise then erase.
I could be wrong !!

Hi, Phil if you know anybody with a DEC it will reset EGR Adaptions as i have done it myself the other week.HTH Darren

FIX...
I got my autodiagnose lead fixed, loaded the latest software and was then able to reset the EGR adaptions. Just when i was loosing faith with the updates from autodiagnose.
