BMW E39 1999 - Breather valve leaking #

Year of Manufacture *: 1999
Engine Code or CC *: 20S64
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Snap on modis

Hi all,
I have the above in at the minute and it will barely tick over.The intake pipe between the air flow meter and inlet manifold was perished and cracked so i fitted a new one,it ran no better.
I put the smoke pro on and i have a large leak out of a breather valve at the bottom of the manifold,it has a pipe going to the top of the rocker cover.
I cant see how this valve is held on,can someone tell me if it is removable in place or will the manifold have to come off,

No need to take the manifold off. Order all the plastic pipes as well because these go brittle and break when you try and seperate them.

Hi Dave

This is a common fault the Diaphragm is about 30 pounds and its held on with two alan bolts,

Thanks for that lads,it must be handier than it looks,i have done a few on the 3 series but never on a 5,i cant even see the allen keys..must get new eyes.

Hello again,
I got to fit the breather pipe today,handy job, but still running no better.It will start fine but cut out after about 3 seconds of lumpy running.Checked both cam sensors,crank sensor and then fuel pressure,all ok.I then noticed that it runs perfectly with the air flow meter disconnected,once reconnected it goes lumpy again and cuts out.I cant even get live data in the short time frame when it stalls,are these prone to afm faults or cause these symptoms ?

Have you got an option to reset basic settings after replacing breather pipe.

AFM are quite common on BMW's if you look on internet forums but it seems only best to fit genuine.

I did reset all settings after fitting both pipes,will try to get an afm tomorrow.
Will post results.

'Reset basic settings', depending on your scanner might not do it, You will have had large Multiplicative values with the air leak you have now fixed, Your description now sounds as though it is mega rich which is what it will be if the adaptions are not reset correctly.

Hi Ed,
That did cross my mind,i am using Modis and under special functions it has a "reset all basic settings" menu. When i select this,it seems to reset in less than a second but does confirm that the "reset is successful"
I would have thought that the car would run somewhat different after replacing the valve and pipes but its absolutely no different,until i disconnect the AFM.How do i know if they are reset for sure ?
Any ideas ?
