Skoda Octavia FSI I.6 2004 - Misfire on light throttle #

Year of Manufacture *: 2004
Engine Code or CC *: 1600
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Bosch and vag-com

Hello,

car is driving me nuts

Misfire on a light throttle opening at approx 2000 revs

Fault code is P301-combustion misfire cylinder 1

Have re-newed plugs-and swopped coils around to try and move it

On live data the misfire count on cyl 1 at 2000 revs is loads.At idle and WOT nothing.Other cylinders have zero at all times.

Car has only done 15000 miles since new-owned by an elderly gent

No evident air leaks with a smoke-pro.4 good compressions hot and cold.

Can somebody help me with the next step

Hi Darcy,

For this sort of thing, I have a piece of kit to attach to the coil pack and then you can see if it is an HT fault by watching the spark. A scope does the same but if you have neither, then attach a plug lead between coil and plug and then get your timing gun out (remember them!) and attach to the lead and watch the flashing which will show up an ignition misfire. If nothing is there,then I would shift my attention to the engine. 4 gas readings would throw some light on it as well. Best of luck.

PS. Although the smoke pro is supposed to be good, I have been led to believe it is not infallible. A 4 gas check would therefore be helpful.

Thanks for the reply.
I dont think its coil-by moving other coils into position,it should move the cylinder misfire.

I could post the gas readings.

What revs would be best?

Hello good sir,how are you?
Post a gas reading at idle, part load (when the miss is happening) and one higher up the rev range.
Is the miss there all the time or is it only when warm?
Do you have any freeze frame data?
What is happening to the MAP reading at the three stages? HTH

Check the plastic pipe for the brake servo very carefully - we've had several with splits causing misfires on one or two cylinders.

right fuel grade being used fsi engine has to use 98 ron ,ordinary supermarket fuel not good enough
old gentleman,low mileage, driven sedately could it just be it wants proper fuel and an italian tune-up
low tech but could be an answer

Car is much worse when cold.When hot,its difficult to get driving,but static very evident.I will post gas readings and map values later

Ok,

map readings are idle 340hpa-misfire 260hpa-4000revs 210hpa

gas readings
o2 readings and hc readings are practically zero at all times

Tick over is co 0.003
L 1.000
CO2 14.96
Misfire CO 0.027
CO2 15.28
L 0.998

What has become evident today,is that static,with a warm engine,it will miss right up through the rev range,providing you get the throttle position/load just right,i.e just leaning on the throttle.

Hi Darcy,

My initial thoughts are because there is no discernable increase in HC and O2 when the mis-fire is present then I will probably rule out engine and ignition mis-fire. So we are left with a fuelling fault. Either the injector or Mark has hit on it with his fuel grade theory. There will be someone along soon with their views.

Hi Darcy, out of interest what were your vac readings today cold & hot? .What are the STFT & LTFT today , can you do a cylinder balance test?
