BMW 530d 3.0 E39 2000 - ABS fault, N/S/F wheel - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2000
Engine Code or CC *: 3000
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Sykes acr4

Scanner tells me n/s/f wheel speed sensor fault. Sensor has been replaced by another garage.
Swapped front sensors around, checked continuity of wiring to traction control unit. ABS and traction control lights on. Have heard these bosch ECUs can go wrong? Will I have to send it off for testing? any help appreciated

Hi Adrian

Has a genuine sensor been used ?

Can you confirm wheel position/speed using serial data ?

Have you scoped the sensor to confirm fault ?

I would personally want to confirm the fault before sending the unit away.

Thanks Glyn, have swapped front sensors side to side and back again.The fault stays with n/s/f

Will the fault clear ? does the car have to be driven for the fault to reset?

Hi, sounds like a wiring fault or a ECU fault.
Check the sensor signals at the ECU plug and not the sensor, use the known good front sensor as a reference signal.9 drop the front wheels in a BRT and compare signal outputs. HTH

Does this have magnetic or toothed abs rings. We have replaced wheelbearings on bmws with active sensors, usually rears though.

Fault clears then comes back when the car is started.comes on without driving. The owner says the light goes on and off when driving

This is a common fault changed the ECU, they are cheaper from Bosch than they are from BMW

Had ABS ecu repaired,refitted it and lights stayed off during road test.Left it idling and the ABS and T/C lights came back on .Faults 59 can message ECU.33 Left front speed sensor.112 Unknown error.Cleared faults but lights still staying on...

Before you blame BBA, perhaps you could give more deatails on the wiring checks between control unit and sensor,s?
Continuity is only part of a wiring test.
And i hate to admit it the ACR4 does miss read some codes on these.

Help you out. hmmmmmmm

Stop Wasting your money trying to save the customer money by buying bodged up / repaired parts from anywhere.

Yes, I know we all do it and end up shooting ourselves in the foot.

It ends up costing you several hours of wasted labour and grief off the customer because his cars not fixed all because youve tried to get it repaired.

I would buy a New ecu from BMW or Bosch and at least you have a good idea that you are fitting something thats most likely to be fault free. ( Although even then, not always )
And the chance of getting the same fault on a New unit is very slim leaving you with a clear view of what the next step is if it doesn't cure it.

( and at the worst, you then end up with a new part on your shelf for the next one if it doesn't cure it )

P.S. When you have done all your tests, i,e continuity, short to earth etc and proved that your sensors are ok ( as you have ) then there should be little point sending anything away for testing. just stick your neck out, buy a replacement and keep your fingers crossed, i wouldn't trust any testing company to test a component on a bench as you can do better testing on the vehicle.

Although I see why youve had it tested etc as it gives you that feeling of being certain that your diagnosis was correct and you are not wasting any money buying something that you dont really need. ( if they do the job properly )

Sent this car to a local electrical specialist in the end .Turns out the replacement sensor was not a genuine part and my scanner didnt pick up the fault. The repaired ECU was fine. Replaced sensor with genuine - All working great now.

If it was a non-genuine sensor at fault could you explain how swapping the sensors as per your post on dec 4 did not swap the fault to the o/s/f.
