Vauxhall Zafira 1.8 X18XE 1999 - MIL on, code P0505, rough running and stalling #

Year of Manufacture *: 1999
Engine Code or CC *: X18XE!

As above, MIL on, P0505 jerking and rough running, occasional stalling.

Interestingly if the fault is cleared with the engine running at 1500, it goes smooth for a few seconds before the MIL comes back on and the rough running returns.

I have checked in archives and the suggestion seems to be that the ECU may be duff.

The throttle body appears to have been replaced recently and the running issues are not affected by disconecting either the MAF or the EGR valve.

It runs smoother at low speeds (1500-2000) with the electrical conector to the throttle body disconnected (But more poorly at higher speeds, which is not surprising)

Is there any way of confirming ECU failure without actually replacing it (Expensive, and I am not sure I have the programing equipment nececary)

I have also seen suggestions that a "Reflash" might help. Is this likly?

I have checked the camshaft timing.

When it misfires, the exhaust goes oxygen rich but withouit any excessive HC.

It runs smooth with the throttle body connecters disconnected (As it does, breifly, if the fault code is cleared) so I would be surprised if it was a purly mechanical issue

(I did intitially consider the possibility of broken/weak valve spring(s) )

This is not a MAP sensing system

So you can,t tell us what the inlet manifold vacuum is.
Does it have an EVAP valve on the o/s inner wing with a pipe going to the throttle body ?

ps if its runs rough they normally post misfire codes.

Hiya Paul, I think Kevin is right, check Evap pipe on the back of the throttle body, runs alongside air intake pipe from MAF. Difficult to see, squirt of carb cleaner down back of throttle body will find it for you, Gwyn

Recently had an Astra G in with same code and symptoms, that went to the dealer who fitted an ECU and throttle body at a cost of £1300 !

Well, got back to it today.

There are no air leaks.

VAC figures to awnser above quiry..

With and without throttle body electrical loom connected

With Without
idle 17" 18"
1500 18" 20"
3000 8" 19"

Now, the poor "With" figures are down to the fact that with the loom connected the injectors fire irrgularly causing it to run masively lean. I can not really see any evidence of mechanical/air leak/blocked exhaust issues based on those vac readings...

With the loom disconnected (I am guessing forcing a form of limp mode) everything runs much better (though the higher end performance suffers, presumably due to the fact that the ECU is no longer receiving TPS data)

I have checked all the terminals on the throttle body using PICO-scope and (according to Auto-data) everthing is working as it should.

Except that the car as a whole is not.

The owner has already replaced the throttle body on the advise of vauxhall (Not unreasonably given their poor reputation)

Replacing the ECU seems a rather expensive way of testing it!
