Ford Galaxy 2.3 Y5B 1997 - Occasional sudden jerk #

Hi all

Havent used UKAT for a while but need to share this fault with you. Ford Galaxy, 2.3L petrol. Occasional sudden and quick drop in engine speed, feels a bit like 1 misfire, no pattern to it and no warning when it is gonna happen, sometimes once every couple of minutes, sometimes several every 5 or 10 minutes. None of the live data readings drop out when this fault occurs.

No faults were stored. Live data showed the temp sensor starting at -11C and rising to 63C, replaced temp sensor and still get same readings. Also noticed throttle voltage starts at 0.1v closed and 0.8 WOT on scanner. Getting the same throttle voltage readings at the ECU with voltmeter. If i disconnect the ECU and measure resistance at the ECU plug, im getting 0-3.7K from the throttle sensor which is good and im getting 40K on the temp sensor which is about right (autodata shows 20C as 38K). I am getting 5ohms (anywhere in the circuit) on the common earth for these sensors which should be an earth fron the ECU, tried a parallel earth but made no difference to the readings.

Anyone else had this or similar? Im thinking maybe faulty ECU?

Hi Ian,

Have you tried looking at the ignition side of things with this vehicle? I too sometimes get weird and wonderful readings from my gear which muddies the water a bit and end up disappearing up my own back-side trying to fathom it out. Assuming there are no DTC's and the vehicle drives OK apart from the odd glitch which you mention, I would start with the basics.

This is now throwing up a fault code for throttle position sensor low, clears and reappears later.

Does this one have the ECU in the scuttle below the windscreen? If so any sign of water, Weve seen a few of these with water in the ECU's.

Yeah, its the ECU up the top of the dash, behind the instrument panel. Cant take the vehicle for a test drive, can only run the engine. You dont have to drive it to experience it.

Had one of these a year or more ago, insulation on low tension side of coil pack wiring had broken down inside of outer plastic sheathing, amazingly it still ran, but very tempermentally.
As you can imagine the codes on that were a bit random!

Funny you should say that, its had all the wiring going to the coil and other sensors in that area replaced in the past, i couldnt see any problem with it.

Are the wires heat shrunk or taped up? The ones on the car we did were all melted together inside the insulation, it seemed to extend quite a long way beyond just rocker cover, in fact it took two visits before we got it all.

Weve had this problem, it was a coil breaking down.
We replaced the 2 coils and both HT leads, this sorted the problem.
