VW Golf 1.4 16v AHW 1998 - Over fueling, code 00522 #

Year of Manufacture *: 1998
Engine Size and Code *: 1.4 16v ahw
( Optional ) Scanner Used: carman scan lite
( Optional) Fault Codes: 00522

Engine over fueling cold and hot replaced engine coolant temp sensor no MIL light on but code 00522 still comes up fuel pressure ok and timing ok.

Morning Brian,

The information you have provided is a bit sparse. Can you provide the definition of the fault code and if you have the gas readings that will tell us the extent of the over-fuelling. Also what other checks, if any, have you done. Is there a history behind this?

hi pete fault code relates to engine coolant temp sensor which is new and all wiring connections are ok customer only had the car a few weeks (private sale)car running so rich it is off the scale on the gas analyser it will only start with full throttle when hot thanks brian

Thanks Brian,

So if you have replaced the CTS and the fault code re-occurs, I think you need to look at the voltages on the CTS. I do not have the relevant info at hand until tonight but is it a 2 or 4 wire CTS and is the MAP sensor remote or part of the inlet manifold?

pete, 4 wire coolant temp sensor and map sensor is fixed to side of manifold with 2 screws. thanks brian.

Evening Brian,

As I have previously stated, I would want to check the integrity of the signal circuit from the CTS to the ECU. As a guide, I would expect to see a slow changing voltage from approx 4v to about 0.6v as the engine warms up on one of the 4 wires before you delve further into it. Also I have seen air-locks where the CTS sits which means the CTS is not measuring the correct temperature.

had a very similar thing last week . failing emissions on mot way off scale ..short term fuel trim was minus 28 % but still ran rich as hell..cleaned throttle body(fly by wire type)..hay presto trim at 3% flew emissions .have you taken a short term fuel reading?
