VW Golf 1.4 AHW 1998 - Emission failure, high CO (11) at idle - Fixed #

Engine Size and Code *: 1.4 ahw
( Optional ) Scanner Used: solus pro
( Optional) Fault Codes: 00525, 00282, 01087

Hi we've got this car in for mot failed on emissions.
Idle
co 11
co2 7.4
o2 0.5
hc 930
Fast Idle
co 0.7
co2 13.8
o2 1.3
hc 340
We've have tried different map and o2 sensors but didn't improve it. When map sensor multiplug disconnected emissions improve. We've scoped most of the sensors they all seem ok o2 sensor stays at 0.7 at idle then starts switching from 0.15 to 0.8 at fast idle. Injectors are open for 6.5ms at idle and about 3ms at fast idle. we checked cam timing which was one tooth out but didn't improve it. We don't have any more ideas so any help would appreciated thanks.

Hi forgot to say we've tried a different fuel pressure regulator which didn't improve it.

It is never going to be right with the throttle adaptions out. You should clean the body and reset as a first step.

What made you try a map and pressure reg?

Any fault codes? What make are the O2 sensors?

Pete, the codes are in the opening post.

The last one means idle adaption not carried out. That could well explain the oxygen too.

Thanks Alan....memo to administrators...Would it not be more helpful if in the posting guide, that all fault codes present be accompanied by their meaning? Saves us helpful guys having to look them up...(not your fault Phil)

Why would you need to look them up? You mean you don't know them all by heart?

I actually agree though, if someone is asking for help they should include details like code meanings and not expect members to look them up.

It is included at the top of the page

At the very least it would indicate that they had found out what the code meant and and had carried out some relevant tests.

Hi forgot to say that we have tried cleaning throttle body and restting basic settings still didn't change anything. We thought map sensor because when we disconnected the emissions improved and fuel presure reg. was just a guess because we haven't got the gear to test the pressure. The lambda we tried was genuine and was switching as we would expect.

What do you mean nothing changed?

With the TB cleaned and adapted, the 01087 code should clear. Did you post a code that is not present or did the adaption not work?

If it is still logging 01087 then that needs to be sorted before you move on with the job.

Hi after cleaning and resetting the throttle body the code cleared and hasn't returned.
The codes i posted were there when i started but all have been cleared and not returned sorry if this was confusing things.

Hi Phil,

Sooo to recap..from what I understand you have now changed the relevant bits and pieces, carried out the resetting procedure and you have no fault codes present....but you still have the very high emissions. Reckon you need to try Mark's suggestion and look for an air leak.

PS..how does this thing drive?

Hi we have looked for an air leak but we haven't got a smoke machine and because its running so rich already spraying brake cleaner around doesn't seem to affect the running. The car drives ok the engine runs a bit rough and is under powered but i would expect that as it running so rich.

I suspect i may get some abuse here.....
But you can,t test the fuel pressure and can,t smoke the inlet for leaks due to lack of equipment !!!
Time to spend some money i think.

Hi Phil,
Sticking my head above the ramparts and waiting to get it shot off...
It is difficult to invest in tools in the current climate I know, I couldn't afford to buy a smoke machine, so I made one and it has proved very useful too. But what about the time honoured method of getting someone to stuff a rag up the exhaust and listening carefully. I suspect you have an exhaust leak before the first lambda sensor. What lambda value did you get as a high CO and a high lambda is often a giveaway.

After testing everything and smoking it and getting local vw dealer to look at as well we ended up putting an ecu on which cured the fault.
Thanks for every ones help.
