BMW 323i (E46) 2003 - Misfire from cold - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2003
Engine Size and Code *: 22 6S 1
( Optional ) ECU Type: MS43
( Optional) Fault Codes: 238, 242 (Misfire cyl 1 and 5)

Hi All
This car belongs to a customer of my son and after starting from cold it misfires for approx 1 min. After running for 30 seconds or so.It has been smoke tested,coils swapped over, injectors swapped over, new maf, new pcv valve, and new genuine plugs. Every time the misfire returns at the same cylinders.The head-gasket is sound. My son works in Hampshire and as i live in Tamworth its difficult to help him. My question is this.Does anyone have a silver bullet for this fault? if not is anyone near Fleet in Hampshire a BMW specialist that can have a look at this for him.

Hydraulic lifters like Ed says are known faults, but try this , give the engine a flush out with oil system cleaner first,drain oil out, and try using a 0w 30 grade full syn oil , in some cases the oil carnt releive fast enough from the lifters so they jack out and hold the valves open till the oil gets more fluid and lifters return to normal, 16valve peugeot petrols do similar. Its worth a try before a big expensive strip down, but advise customer it may not work.

Thanks for the replies and sorry for the delay.
After carrying out an oil flush and oil and filter change the misfire had improved a little.Out of curiosity he disconnected the inlet cam vanos unit whilst the misfire was present and it dissapeared.So a new one was fitted and the jobs a good un!
One for the memory banks i think.
