Volvo V40 2.0 Fenix 5.1 1997 - Dead engine ECU - Fixed #

( Optional ) ECU Type: Fenix 5.1
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Autodiagnos

I'm trying to way up options as to how to replace a failed engine ECU on this vehicle. Volvo prices would write the car off, so I'm exploring the options of replacing with a second hand unit to get my customer back up and running again. I've been told that it is possible to clear the immobiliser coding from this Fenix 5.1 system if I were to purchase a second hand unit, but I've never had to replace one of these so I don't know what is involved with recoding it to the vehicle. I have the Autodiagnos scanner here with the original Volvo kit, which I believe was the dealer tool for a while? Can anyone tell me what needs to be done and whether I can reprogram it to the vehicle using Autodiagnos?

Hi Peter,

I've never done this but reading on Vadis it says that the Fenix ECM would need to have its Verlog code blanked first. For this you would need the PIN code. From the way it describes it, this would be done before its removed from the donor vehicle so you need the PIN code for that vehicle. Though I would have thought it may be possible to do it on any vehicle so long as you have the PIN for the donor ECM.

Volvo should be able to supply the PIN code for a cost, though not sure how strict they are on having all the details to hand, i.e. registration document etc for the donor vehicle.

Once it has been blanked the next vehicle it is fitted to and the engine started, it will then lock itself to the immobiliser unit of that car.

The MTPro Volvo application should be able to do the blanking as I can see it has a Program menu option for the Fenix 5.1 system.

I found a company near me that could delete the immobiliser code from a second hand ECU I located. Plugged it into the car and hey presto - all is ok. No coding required! I assume it learns the immobiliser code from the vehicle when you first plug it in. Anyway, thanks for your reply Sean and I now have a happy customer.
