Jaguar XJ8 4.0 V8 1998 (R) - Breakdown and non start P1638 #

Year of Manufacture *: R
Engine Size and Code *: 4.0V8
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Multiscan
( Optional) Fault Codes: P1638, (P1336, P1396 listed as pending)

Broke down after about 90 mins driving. Sounds as if "Trying" to start but customer ran battery down attempting to restart (More on that later)

Multiscan does not cover this system directly and fault codes retrieved via generic OBD2.

Naturally Autodata has no information on these codes.

Would anybody be able to give a description?

(A brief attempt to start established attempts at firing as described by customer but battery was very flat and even with jumps cranking was not enthusiastic so I havent really been able to do any more advanced diagnostics yet Unfortunatly the drivers key will not unlock the boot manually so removing the battery to charge it presents problems!(And no, charger cannot be taken to car!) Ho Humm)

P1336 comes up as Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor - range/ performance

Evening Paul,

.....and P1638 is CAN Link ECM/INSTM circuit network.

P1396 is Variable Timing Solenoid B circuit

I had a feeling that Crank sensor migght be involved (Its frequently a good start if one is having to hazard a guess

)

Would the CAN fault P1638 actually stop the engine from running??

I have been doing some internet searches since my original post which reveal people who have P1638 but their cars are drivable, with just instrument issues.

The next problem is how to solve the battery charging issue....

P1396 vvt solinoid malfunction B bank (one possible cause = camshaft drive fault !! )
and P1336 crank and cam sensor,s synchronization malfunction.
Possible sensor or chain fault ?

Dont forget to do a compression test these are common for cylinder liner failure

If the fault lies within the cam drive system then both the P1396 & P1336 tie in and relate to each other. HTH

That doesnt sound good! :-(

At the risk of asking a possibly dumb sounding question...

Where is the crank sensor??? (Like I said, Autodata is a bit light on this model!)

Sensor is at the bottom of the engine next to the access grommet for undoing the torque converter bolts.
