Toyota Rav4 2.0 1998 - Timing belt snapped, rebuilt, now non start #

Year of Manufacture *: 1998
Engine Size and Code *: 2.0L

hi i have this rav4 came in with the timing belt snapped i have removed the head changed all the valve & re fitted everything it won’t start no spark or fuel but when i plug onto the diagnostics plug it sparks but still won’t start no fault codes need help checking timing as i know engine at tdc crank pulley should be on “0” & cam pulley has a small hole put a drill piece into the head but don’t know about the gear that runs the other cam how it would be set up there are 3 marks on both gears. thanx

Go back to basics, TDC number 1 valves on number 4 should be on the rock. this should be close enough give you an indication of correct marks to use.

confirm TDC with rod down plug hole, or more accurately a bubble on the plug hole.

Got the timing sorted now it starts & runs fine but it only starts when I plug into the diagnostics socket & have power running though the connecter I think lots of the older cars had that. On the Launch it’s supplied with the machine as a crocodile connecter I took power from battery. This car diagnostics socket is located under the bonnet has the old Toyota plug. Even when running & you disconnect the power to the diagnostics socket it switches off. Fuel & spark loss is there anything i need to reset. There is no fault codes.

hi it may be worth checking all the fuses and see if there is a fuel shut off (accident cut off) as it sounds as if you have a loss of power to the ecu or a loss of earth is there not an earth on the back of the head or rocker cover somewhere.

hi martin yeah i checked all the fuses seem ok i can't find a fuel cut off switch when its running the engine management light starts flashing but i think on Toyotas it does that when you plug into the system on older models.

hi joe still think you have a loss of supply and thet the power up lead to the diagnostic plug is back feeding normally with those you can retreve the codes manualy by bridging 2 terminals withing the diag socket would need to confirm pins from auto data. however having used the launch for the stuff the snappy dosent like i have had ocasions when i have had a back feed through the diag power up lead.
The car was running when the belt snapped there for you need to go back and retrace your job step by step and find thet lead you left off or the one thats broken somewhre 9/10 when i go to look at jobs like yours its something incorrectly positioned or not connected.

Did you remove the jumper lead connection in the socket? Think you need to plug it in to that socket, does it need to be in to run?
