BMW 1 Series 1.6 2005 - Hunting at idle, codes 2A88 and 2A83 - Fixed #

Engine Size and Code *: 1.6cc N45B16 - B16a
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Autocom & Hella Guttman
( Optional) Fault Codes: 2A88, 2A83, Vanos inlet and exhaust adaption

Hi folks,

Vehicle was presented as a non-runner, timing chain had stretched and jumped a few teeth. New chain, tenshioner and guides fitted, engine sludged up due to lack of oil changes. Vehicle now runs but "hunts" at idle, the two fault codes relating to VANOS and multiple misfire fault codes which I think is related to the erratic idle. We used the special tool to set everything up and was wondering if anyone can shed some light on the VANOS codes. I'm thinking that they hadn't locked when we set it up.

Sorry folks,
After a good road test everything has settled, I remember having the same fault after the last one we done, old age and poor memory I'm afraid!

Glad you sorted it Mark, out of interest what is the Hella tool like, I first came across it searching Tolerance data?

Hi Tony,

I had the Mega Macs 42 on loan and I found it very good although the display was rather small, it never failed to get into any vehicle I used it on and seems to have quite a broad spectrum of coding abiltities on many vehicle makes, well worth a look.
