Nissan Micra K12 1.2 2006 - Cam / crank sensors - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2006
Engine Size and Code *: 1.2
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Solus Pro / Picoscope
( Optional) Fault Codes: none

Car will drive for up to ten days with no problems then at random cuts out, will restart straight away but in 200 yards stop again leave for 10 minutes and will run fine for another couple of weeks.

Needless to say it wont do it whilst hooked up for testing, I have been through all the normal things and everything checks out. I know these have an issue with timing chains this was checked and found to have only 10mm play (Knowledgeable Nissan contact says 20mm is the limit) however I am not sure about scoping pattern in respect of triggering.

Appreciate any comments on following pattern, I was expecting patterns to line up, could it be that the trigger point is midway between the crank segments !

Crank is red,cam is blue

That capture looks ok, I think once the initial cam waveform rises within the last rise of the crank signal, its ok.
Any fault codes?
Would be worth swapping cmp and ckp (same part)and seeing what happens.

Hello Ray

No fault codes present (as per heading) the ecu must be looking at either the switch on or the switch off but I am not sure which. We had a Tino some time ago with a worn chain and the two patterns were a long way apart.

This is a good capture from a 2005 k12.
I'm not sure I understand the ecu looking at the switch on/off? I believe there has to be a tolerance or a window that within which the ecu will not log a fault, so if its slightly ahead or behind where it should be this will not cause a problem.
To me this sounds like a ckp failure and by swapping over the sensors the car wouldnt stall if the fault occurred but would leave you a p0340 code.

I made a calculated guess at the crank sensor and replaced it with customers agreement, customer road testing to see if any difference.

I noted they have changed the design of this sensor and it is now not interchangeable !!!!!!!

Hi Malcolm these engines are so sensitive to chain stretch, I'm not sure about the max 20mm play but one of my ex lads works for the local Nissan Dealer and he reliably tells me to check the chain tensioner shaft protrusion, if it protrudes more than 10mm the chain is knackered. The tensioner is easily checked by removing the cam cover and looking down at it and measuring the protrusion. We have had similar problems on a Micra which had only done 28,000 miles which had a stretched chain but it did come up with codes for crank - cam correlation.

Customer returned today smiling, 10 days now with new crank sensor and no further problems.

Pattern was good must have been breaking down internally at random times, thanks for all your input on this one
