Rover 400 1.4 16V 1997 - Emissions fail #

Year of Manufacture *: 1997
Engine Size and Code *: 1.4 K16
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Laser 2000
( Optional) Fault Codes: none

Now, what would you say is wrong with this car...?

Emissions figures are as follows (snapshot figures, of course in the real world everything moves around a bit)

Idle;

HC 193
Co 0.655
CO2 14.19
O2 1.19
NOX 67ppm
Lambda 1.029

2000 rpm

HC 60
CO 0.72
CO2 14.50
O2 0.73
NOX 206
Lambda 1.011

The lambda sensor switches as it should

Using the Laser, there do not appear to be any anomilies. Air and coolent temp behave as they should. as does manifold vac. Oil filters and plugs have been changed to no avail Unfortunatly the laser does not provide figures for trim values and it is the only machine I have that will talk to the ecu.

Could it be anything OTHER than a tired cat??

WOW you still running that old laser!!!

I still have those manuals I forget to send you....

So would mine but for the fact that I have tried that. Admittedly it is an aftermarket one but the new cat seems to make almost no diference whatsoever.

After a long run the figures were acceptable (but not zero) at idle, but only for a few minuits. then it was back to the old figures

I have checked it with one of those IR thermomotors and it just doesnt seem to be getting particularly hot. If I had the luxery of time I would try wrapping it in some of that ersatz asbestos to insulate it and see whether that made any diference.

The local rover "Dealer" (as you might expect) sugests a "Genuine" cat might solve it, but before going down this route I am trying to consider whether I might have missed something stoopid. Hence the question...

The Laser is frequently usefull since the current scan tool manufacturers dont seem to comprehend that people actually own cars more than ten years old.....

Hi Paul,

Agree with Michael. The Lambda reading at fast idle is above 1.00 and with slightly high CO generally points to an inefficient cat.

Laser 2000, WOW, I have not seen one of those in years.

If it helps I have T4 (testbook) for everything rover, but now I have said that whats the betting that you are three hundred miles away.

If not you are welcome to come over and plug the old girl in.

Looking at figures definately cat.
I have found some of the cheaper cats do tend to take a fair bit of warming up to get the figures down. Also Found that after a few good runs the cats seem to become more efficient almost like they have to be worn in a bit. Assuming this is due to manufacturing process leaving residue on honeycombe or something that need to be burnt of a bit before the cat works properly.
Is this the old type with just the underfloor cat or the later type with the one in the manifold and little one underneath?
