Vauxhall Meriva 1.6 Z16XE 2005 - Non start, no fuel pump but has spark - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2005
Engine Size and Code *: 1600 z16xe
( Optional ) Scanner Used: opcom / sykes pickavant
( Optional) Fault Codes: none

Vauxhall Meriva towed to workshop after it wouldnt start on customers drive.
Plugged into sykes handheld scanner entered correct engine code but came up with ecu mismatch, allowed me to check fault codes and none present. Would only show battery voltage in live data.
Thinking it was a problem with the scanner I plugged it into opcom only to find it wouldnt talk to it at all!
Changed crank sensor as it seemed a good place to start but has not made any difference.
Checked for spark and there is one! However there is no fuel. Checked fuel pump and is working, Bridged relay and pump works. Checked switch wire from ecu to relay and ecu is not switching relay. If I disconnect ecu multiplug and use power probe to earth switched wire the relay works and switches pump. Vehicle doesnt start as im assuming the ecu won't fire injectors without the signal from the fuel pump relay switch wire.
I am suspecting a faulty ecu, checked fuses and ecu seems to have a good earth.
Immobiliser possibly? Not sure if immobiliser cuts the spark too? Management light stays on when ignition is left on.
Am I missing something? Help!!

Do you have any other scan tool that will communicate well and carry out an actuator test for fuel pump relay

does it start when you power the pump

No only have them two available however seems strange that neither will communicate properly.
OP com is dealer level and will talk to anything GM and the sykes is usually very strong on the vauxhalls but seems to mismatch ecu identity so will not allow actuator tests.
If I switch the ecu side of the relay to earth then the pump runs but the car will not as I'm assuming the ecu isnt firing injectors due to not seeing the fuel pump relay as working?

Interesting as I would have expected it to run, Is it a genuine opcom as I had a cloned one and it often gave me greif

Do you own a scope?

When you earth the relay does the pump actually pump or can you just hear it run?

Could be possible ecu failure but I always believe everything else needs checking first.

from looking at wiring diagram the FP relay supplies the power to the injectors as well.

Have you checked for power at the injectors whilst your activating the FP relay.

Also have you checked the 2 fuses for the engine control relay.

Have checked all fuses on the management side. When activating the relay it pumps fuel. Will scope the injectors to see what they are doing. I assumed that if the ecu does not see the power coming fom the fuel pump relay it would not fire injectors? Otherwise how would it know if the fuel pump relay is working? I shall scope them and see whats happening but by the fact it doesnt run I am suspecting they are not firing.
Had a look through archive on here last night and found an astra with a similar fault and was apparently a common failure on these ecus for them to drop the negative switch to fuel pump relay so I am strongly thinking in that direction.
OP com is a cloned version but hasnt given me any grief up until now. Upgrading to proper version shortly though as its such a great tool.
I agree that the ecu is the last thing I wanna change and that all other avenues have to be checked first!

Fault was ecu, had ecu repaired and plugged back in, fuel pump kicking in and out car starting. Was a bit of a pain finding someone to repair ecu but found a place in London for £325 that could do it.
Customer happy and off on her holidays!

Hi sean,

Dealer retail is about £450 plus vat I think for these, with trade club discount and a bit of persuasion you could get a brand new one from Vauxhall for a price not too different from the repaired price quoted...

I know what I woould rather do.

Know it's a bit late but ac tronics normally repair these for £201+ vat
