Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 Z14XE 2005 - Intermittent non start - Fixed #

Engine Size and Code *: 1.4 Z14XE
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Verus
( Optional) Fault Codes: None

This vehicle has an intermittent non start problem. When it does run it is absolutely fine you would'nt know it has a problem. It usually starts ok first time, but if then switched off it is very reluctant to start again. When turning over it pops in the exhaust then after a few turns it sounds as though its too far advanced and struggles to get over compression. The plugs were found to be black and sooty as though there is incomplete combustion. Have checked emissions,scoped crank sensor, cam sensor, map sensor, O2 sensor, all OK. Fitted new coil pack and plugs (genuine)in desperation but no change. There are no codes recorded and when I try to go into live data the Verus loses communication. If I had any hair I would now be pulling it out by the handful.

EGR valves are very common sources of non starts on these vehicles

Borrowed another scanner, now comes up with P1613 wrong or no immobilizer signal.Not sure where to go from here.

Hi dave give the plugs on the ecu a good wiggle with the motor ruining see if it cuts out if it happens you could have a suspect ecu problem Had a few with very similar faults hope it help pete

Thanks for all your replies, no fix yet, checked the instrument panel multiplug (ok), tried spare key no change, also scoped the signal from the transponder, seems ok, although not sure what it should look like as there is no waveform shown on autodata. Have now sent the ecu for testing and awaiting outcome. Have found an article on the pico website in their case study section, a corsa with a similar fault had a damaged can wire close to the ecu so will have alook at that as soon as I get a chance. As I mentioned before, on the odd occasion as the engine was cranking over it would almost stop, struggle to get over compression then go on again. Obviously been using the starter quite a lot since its been here and it also developed a squeak. Took it out and lubricated the pinion and front bearing as far as possible, now magically the starting problem seems to have disappeared. Have since fitted a new starter and will be giving it a good test before the customer has it back. In retrospect I suppose it should have been one of my first investigations instead of the last. Will have to invest in an ampclamp
