VW Polo 1.4 BKY 2006 - Loss of power and surging - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2006
Engine Size and Code *: 1.4 bky

Any help appreciated, this vehicle came in with loss of power. No faults codes stored, emissions normal. Starts from cold and runs normally at first then begins surging as the engine warms up.Have checked the ect, O2 sensor, valve timing. Also put fresh fuel in the tank, changed the filter and checked fuel pressure.This engine doesnt seem to have an EGR valve.Need to check out the Map and exhaust system tommorrow.Just wondering if anyone has had similar experience,cheers Dave.

Road tested with MAP disconnected and fault disappeared,fitted new genuine sensor and fault back again as before. Checked voltages in and out of sensor, all as specified in autodata,not sure where to go next.

Always worth cleaning & resetting throttle body on VAG.

As said check for air leaks, including any breathers & vac pipes.

May be worth checking valve timing, this set up used to suffer from idler pulleys failing allowing belt to jump.

As mentioned in first post there are no dtcs only ones I have created while testing, also valve timing was one of the first things checked. Throttle body has been cleaned and reset, servo pipe was suspect and has been replaced with new.Will try to blank off large breath pipe to manifold today to eliminate that. Thanks to all who replied.

Blanked off large breather pipe at manifold to eliminate any leaks in that system but no change.Have now turned my attention to checking out the throttle body with the tests laid down in the kis online info. First test checks out the potentiometer resistance which has come up pos, should be between 25&30 kohms but is actually 11.6,the recommendation is to replace the throttle body at this point but I think I will go through the rest of the tests on Monday before I take that option.

Hi Dave,

I had a similar problem a while back on an older polo 1400 16v ( from memory 2004),it turned out the map was giving false readings due to excess carbon build up in the inlet manifold.
Might be of no relevance but thought it might be worth the thought

Hi

Finished checking out throttle body, pedal and map sensor circuits, some discrepancies but nothing of note except the one on the throttle body potentiometer, but didn't think that could be the problem because it ran so well when the map was disconnected.

So decided to check out the oxygen sensor and found a very low resistance at the heater circuit and an open circuit at the calibration resistor. Haven't got much faith in resistance tests but an open circuit is pretty decisive so changed the o2 sensor and now runs sweet as a nut. Still got no idea why it didn't set a fault code but haven't had much to do with broadband sensors before. Thanks for help and suggestions
