Mini Cooper 1.6 2002 - Misfire on #4 injector, code P0304 - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2002
Engine Size and Code *: 1600 w10b16ba
( Optional ) Scanner Used: texa idc4 plus
( Optional) Fault Codes: p0304

Hi chaps
Got a head scratcher here. The above fault code relates to #4 cylinder. Now, am I looking at this from the wrong angle or do I have an ECU playing up. If I use a noid light on the injector it flashes from start up for up to 15 seconds then stops BUT I can energise the injector with TEXA every time, although it only works it for 5 seconds. I have checked the continuity between the ECU and injector and the injector to fuse/relay box - all ok. I have a constant feed at the injector even when the noid light stops flashing. There is nothing else in the circuit between ECU, injector and fuse/relay box.No soldered or crimped joints. All other injectors work ok.
Problem is the customer can only let me have the car today as he needs it for work tomorrow so Im going to have to have it back in next week possibly - bummer!!
Anyone got any ideas???

Hi Kev,

The ECU is seeing a misfire on cylinder #4, it then turns the injector off to protect the catalyst.

You are seeing the effect rather than the cause of the misfire.

Thanks for the replies.
Glyn, I did wonder about that as I had an Astra doing it some time ago. Always worth asking the question though! I did start off looking at the ignition side but could find nothing amiss there. Anyway, the car is coming back in on Monday so I'll let you know how I get on

Hi Kev
Had same fault a few weeks ago. Mine had low compression on cylinder 4. Carried out cylinder leakage test and it was leaking on the exhaust side. Had a crack on one of the exhaust valve seats due to a poor seal between vavle and head.

Thanks Jamie, possible diagnose - All cylinders showing between 160 - 200 psi except cylinder 4 which is struggling to reach 110 psi.
Just goes to show no matter how advanced we go and how much technology we invest in, it can still be so very simple.
I will post a fix if found!

Cylinder head removed and found one of the exhaust valves full of various splits and cracks. All the other exhaust valve seats are badly pitted and obviously not seating well.
Recon cylinder head on order!!
