Mercedes Benz CLK (209) 3.0 2008 - Rattle on startup after chain replacement - Unresolved #

Hi everyone
We have replaced the timing chain, balance shaft, guides, tensioner, cam position plates etc. Due to the teeth on the balance shaft stripping. Ever since there is a rattle on start up when the engine has been standing for a while. It sounds like a slack chain and disappeares when the oil pressure kicks in. We have checked the chain and tensioner when cold and they are perfect. The noise seems to be a vvt cam sprocket but they were ok before the job and no fault codes are stored. It has done about 300 miles since the job and apart from the noise it's perfect.

Hello Allan, have you checked the small 'O' ring on the oil filter housing? It's used to stop oil draining from the filter when left.

Hi Alan
Thanks for responding, i have removed the oil filter and housing because the oil filter was dry of oil, however i can't see why. The only seals i can see are the "O" rings that fit over the plastic center that fit in the middle of the filter itself and those were replaced with the filter. Which seal do you mean and what else could cause the oil filter to drain completely?

Is there not a plastic tube that goes through the centre of the filter with a small 'O' ring on the end? (part of the screw on cap or part of the filter itself). There is no other anti-drain valve on this engine so if the filter is empty double check the seals are the right size & plastic tube isn't split.

Still unresolved, should get the car back in next week.

Unfortunately this one will remain unresolved due to the customers unwillingness to part with anymore money. The only possibility left is the variable timing camshaft pulleys but at £2668.80 inc vat he is going to move the car on. Thanks for all replies and advice
